Kimura disease as an uncommon cause of persistent hypereosinophilia: a diagnostic challenge

Kimura disease (KD) is an unusual inflammatory disease of unknown etiology. Despite being described many years ago, KD might cause diagnostic difficulty or be confused with other conditions. Here, we present a 33-year-old Filipino woman who was referred to our hospital for evaluation of persistent eosinophilia and intense pruritus. Blood analysis and peripheral blood smear review showed high eosinophil counts (3.8 x109/L, 40%) that did not show morphological abnormalities. Besides, high serum IgE concentration was detected (33,528 kU/L). Serological tests were positive for Toxocara canis and treatment with albendazol was initiated. Nevertheless, increased eosinophil counts were still present after several months, alongside with high serum IgE concentrations and intense pruritus. During her follow-up, an inguinal adenopathy was detected. The biopsy revealed lymphoid hyperplasia with reactive germinal centers and massive eosinophil infiltration. Proteinaceous deposits of eosinophilic material were also observed. All these findings, together with peripheral blood eosinophilia and high IgE concentrations, confirmed the diagnosis of KD. The diagnosis of KD should be considered in the differential diagnosis of long-standing unexplained eosinophilia in association with high IgE concentrations, pruritus and lymphadenopathies

Conjunto de metales procedente del poblado de la Edad del Bronce de L’arbocer (Font de la Figuera, Valencia)

[email protected]; [email protected] un conjunto de piezas de metal, de cobre y bronce, halladas de manera casual en el poblado de la Edad del Bronce de L’Arbocer, en la Font de la Figuera, Valencia. Su descripción constituye, junto con los resultados del análisis por Fluorescencia de rayos X, el motivo central de este trabajo pero, además, la realización de una corta campaña de excavación en el yacimiento ha permitido contextualizar el hallazgo y ponerlo en relación con una posible área de actividad metalúrgica. La situación del poblado de L’Arbocer, en el límite de las actuales provincias de Valencia, Alicante y Albacete, es de gran interés a la hora de valorar la presencia de este posible taller metalúrgico y su cronología.In this paper, we present a study of a group of cooper and bronze objects that were found by chance in the Bronze Age village of L’Arbocer (Font de la Figuera, Valencia). The main aims are the description of the objects and the results of the X Ray Fluorescence analyses. Moreover; a short fieldwork season has been carried out, which has allowed us to determine the archaeological context of the metals and to establish their connection with a possible area of metallurgical activity. The village of L’Arbocer is located on the border of the provinces of Valencia, Alicante and Albacete. This is very interesting in helping us to evaluate the presence of a possible metallurgy workshop and its chronology

The Spanish economy in EMU : the first ten years

This paper has been prepared to mark the tenth anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). It seeks to give an overview of the Spanish economy's experience in this new institutional setting. It should be viewed as the result of a joint effort by a sizeable group of researchers from the Banco de España Directorate General Economics, Statistics and Research to rationalise the implications of a structural change on this scale.

Wind Power Variability and Singular Events

Examples of the different events affecting wind power fluctuations are shown.The behaviors and the responses of the Spanish power system and wind power plants experiencing such events were analyzed. Examples presented in this chapter show that some of the wind power integration issues are related to low-voltage ride-through. They are solved through strict grid code enforcement. Other solutions to manage the reserve power generation and the wind power fluctuations are also very important in order to achieve high levels of wind power penetration. In the Spanish case, this could require increasing the availability of dispatchable and fast-start power plants, as well as increasing wind power plant participation on supporting the power system by providing voltage control, inertial emulation, frequency control, oscillation damping, or updated voltage ride-through capabilities.Comment: Chapter of the Book 'Wind Power' (eBook (PDF) ISBN: 978-953-51-6418-0

Estructura Metamaterial Quiral de tipo Fishnet con refracción negativa y bajas perdidas

In this work the authors present a novel chiral metamaterial structure focused on providing negative refractive index and low losses in a wide frequency band. This new structure is constituted by the combination of two low losses structures, a composite chiral metamaterial and a modified fishnet structure. With the aid of a commercial electromagnetic software simulator, the structure is numerically analyzed and characterized. This new fishnet-like chiral metamaterial features two wide frequency bands wherein the refractive indices are negative and exhibits lower losses than its constituents do.Ingeniería, Industria y Construcció
